I remember, as a kid, sitting on my bed with my stuffed dog “Dogga.” As I petted his fur, I thought how easy to love something so cute and soft, but what about the animals who weren’t so snugly and not so very cute. Those creatures in nature, we all regard as “a little bit on the ugly side,” with craggy shells, slimy skin and strange faces. Those that make us scream, and NOT with delight, when we run across them. How in the world did they ever get love shown to them? So as a child, for some reason, I worried about these so-called “ugly ones,” these environmental underdogs, after all…everyone deserved to be loved didn’t they?
As I became the grown-up that I am, my professional acting career took me on many adventures, but I never forgot my quest and desire for the not-so-beautiful creatures among us. As I grew into a writer, I decided I would give them a story for children, of their very own. I chose the unattractive Turkey Vulture because, as it just so happened, two of these buzzards, had roosted in a large tree in the woods behind my house. I would watch these huge creatures fly around, recycling nature, and living their lives. I began to wonder just what life WAS like for these, so misunderstood birds of prey. Through my research, I came to discover just how beneficial they were to our planet with their unique, original “Recycling Program.” In a very distinctive way, these birds do their best to take care of the earth through their natural recycling, and keep it clean for us all. So this is how “Vinnie & Violet…Sweet Buzzard Love” was born. It came from this knowledge, and a desire through both a book and music, to bring to children the wisdom and importance of how we all can participate in our environment and an Eco-friendly world. To be very honest though it came, most of all, from a little girl’s heart, who just wanted all things to find acceptance and understanding, and that great thing called… Love.
